That’s a cap

Hats are an essential for your summer wardrobe. Not only do they shield us from the sun's harmful rays but they also add a certain magic to any ensemble; classic refinement for an elegant gathering; that edgier vibe for a concert at SPAC; or simply the magic of having the perfect cherry on top.

There's nothing wrong with a little country twang, so never shy away from adding the bold touch of a cowboy hat into the mix. According to, you'll be in vogue whether you're wearing one that's colorful with "cats dancing on the bottom of the rim," traditional leather or made out of straw.

"I'm loving embellishments on hats this year," owner of MinkyMink - at 203 Glen St. in Glens Falls - Bannon says. "I have a gorgeous braided sun-brimmed white hat with black pom poms on it that is fun and gives off that bohemian chic vibe."

One of the most interesting national trends will make you want to take a dip, literally. Tight caps, whether bejeweled or a solid hue, make a statement that would get the seal of approval from Michael Phelps. Are you digging a more French vibe? Diamonds and berets are a girl's best friend. You don't have to be headed to a ballgame to sport a baseball cap, or as Elle calls them, "dad caps." Don't be afraid to channel the 1990s and wear it sideways like you did in middle school.

In the end, your decision should be based on your outfit. "If you're getting dressed up, I prefer a fascinator because they are super funky and make a statement," Bannon says. "For men, I think a simple fedora works well. Sorry guys, but I think the trendy hats work best on the ladies!"
