Saratoga Performing Arts Center held its enchanting Nutcracker Tea on Nov. 19 at the Hall of Springs in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. The annual event invites children and their families to enjoy a traditional English tea while watching excerpts from Tchaikovsky's classic holiday ballet performed by the Northeast Ballet Company.
Guests were greeted in the lobby by ballerinas and a violin performance by Michael L'Hommedieu.
The Nutcracker tells the story of a little girl's journey through a fantasy world of fairies, princesses, toy soldiers, and an army of mice. While Tchaikovsky composed the Nutcracker in 1891 in Russia, it wasn't until choreographer George Balanchine introduced his production in New York City in 1954 that the ballet became an American classic.
A highlight of the afternoon was The American Girl Place raffle giveaway for this year's doll of the year—Gabriela—and her accompanying storybook. Gabriela is a limited edition doll with a passion for dance and the arts, and went home with Nutcracker attendee Andrea Pratt.
