After taking over artistic direction of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in 2004, the husband and wife team of cellist David Finkel and pianist Wu Han expanded the organization's reach with new programs and residencies, including a summer stint at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. CMS returns this summer with six dynamic concerts under the direction of Finkel and Han.
The first two concerts (3 p.m. Aug. 6 and 8 p.m. Aug. 8) will feature the debut of the Danish String Quartet in programs that include music by Beethoven, Schubert, Bartok and Brahms. Three of the quartet's current members have known each other since their early teens, when they played chamber music and football together at summer camp. In 2013, the quartet became part of the society's extended family through its CMS Two program.
Other programs will present works by Beethoven on Aug. 13 and Tchaikovsky on Aug. 15.
Performances are on Sunday afternoons and Tuesday evenings in the Spa Little Theater in Saratoga Spa State Park. Tickets include admission to Chamber Chats, a series of discussions with the artists held 45 minutes before each performance. Post-concert meet-and-greets follow Sunday performances, with attendees welcome to convene at the Gideon Putnam Hotel, also in the Spa Park, for an opportunity to meet some of the most esteemed chamber musicians working today. Tickets are $40 for orchestra and balcony side seats, $45 for orchestra and balcony center.
